| Birds mimic popular mobile phone sounds |
|
So you're walking down the street -- and you keep hearing
a mobile phone ringing up in the trees. Did someone suddenly get
fed up with their phone and toss it up into the branches?
Probably not. What you're likely hearing is a bird as it mimics
the sound of something it has heard all too frequently - a human's
mobile phone.
According to a study done in Germany, birds such as the
Jackdaw, Starlings and Jay were the best at mimicry. As the
mobile phone becomes more of an omni-present feature in the world, more
birds will be exposed to it, and attempt to mimic the sound. This
is very similar to the phenomenon of birds mimicing the sounds of car
alarms in cities.
Not to worry - the jay outside your window probably won't
be rocking out to the next big pop hit -- they find it difficult to
mimic the more popular polyphonic ringtones.
